K-Popfrom Diet (2002)
Once dubbed "Miss Long Legs" for her tall stature, South Korean singer Kim Hyun-Jung (b. 1978) was considered one of the reigning female dance singers of the late '90s. However, she began to move away from the popular Euroclub sound that was invading Kim's country, and to branch out with other sounds. This wasn't a complete backfire, but it didn't reinvent her career either. After Hyun-Jung's seventh album, a variety show voted that she needed a makeover. Ouch. She took the advice close to heart, and began a regime that helped her lose a considerable amount of weight. Kim would return with one last album in 2008, but like her last few releases, it didn't sell very well. Currently, she's working on becoming an actress, because that's a less judgmental field of work. From Hyun-Jung's fifth album Diet (wat?) is its second single "Hyun jang". The previous cut "Dan kal" (Knife) was a big hit, and this could have been one as well if Kim hadn't suffered an injury during promotion. Due to this, she could only do a few performances. "Hyun jang" is not the most substantial track, and its arrangement is admittedly limited. However, the fetching spitfire chorus is impossible to dislike. There's a guest female rapper that I could never identify. How irritating.
