029. maika shiratori - someday
SomedayEnglish 5:08Acoustic Popfrom Togenkyo (2003)

As a cynic by nature, I'm drawn more to downbeat music. Some of it's too brooding and hardly cathartic, but sometimes my gloom take a sabbatical when I hear songs such as "Someday". Maika Shiratori is a fairly unknown Japanese singer-songwriter outside of the fact that she's Emiko Shiratori's daughter. Emiko of course is a seasoned singer who sang at the 1972 and 1998 Olympics in Sapporo and Nagano respectively. Another Maika's fact is that she wrote the title song for the popular Japanese television drama Taiyou no Uta (Song of the Sun). She just didn't perform it for the soundtrack. That was handed over to novice singer and budding young actress Erika Sawajiri (under the stage name "Kaoru Amane"). Shiratori would record her own mix later. The concept of folksy female singers with guitars isn't a rare occurrence, and often it's strongly ridiculed. Maika's brand is feminine, endearing and generally beautiful. "Someday", sung completely in English, is an acoustic ballad with a bright outlook despite sad lyrics. Her voice is as gentle as the strumming of her guitar.
