033. kou shibasaki - kagerou

かげろう [Kagerou; Dragonfly]
Japanese 4:54
Ballad, Ethnic Pop, J-Pop
from Ikutsuka no sora (2004)

I feel that I've always introduced Kou Shibasaki (real name Yukie Yamamura, born in 1981) as that "sickle girl from Battle Royale".  It's an injustice of a small sort to label her just as that.  Kou has come a long way since then, and she's paid her dues.  Doubling as an actress and singer, Kou handles both jobs quite well.  As a musician, her songs are generally tranquil and very, well, Japanese.  There is a grace to her music, and this can come off as boring to someone unaccustomed to the gentler side of J-Pop.  Although only a B-side to her single "Ikutsuka no Sora" (Numerous skies), "Kagerou" is one of my favorite Kou tracks.  Its heavily ethnic and spirited.
