K-Pop, Pop R&B
from Blue (1998)K-Pop, Pop R&B
It's just a stroll down ol' K-Pop lane, isn't it? In 2000, a struggling performer made her comeback with a second album. It was sort of a risk because her first album only did moderately well. Imported Korean-American singer J (now "J.ae", but born as Jung Jae-Young in 1977) would go on to revolutionize the idea of contemporary young R&B for Korea. Her song "Uh jeh chuh rum" (Like Yesterday) was a major hit and certified her as a "name" artist in the industry. Her voice alone, a soulful and controlled whisper, was unlike any other singer. The lead single from her first album was "Goodbye", an uptempo and sassy R&B like pop track. J's voice was a bit of a waste here, but you can still hear that richness I love. While J is still recording today, she took a break between her fourth and fifth album that caused her popularity to drastically dwindle. Even with a few years on her, none of these younger girls have a tone like J.
