024. mari iijima - telephone!

English 4:08
Idol Pop, R&B
from Coquettish Blue (1987)

Japanese pop music has generally been a shadow of the west.  In the nineties is when I believe it progressed into its own unique yet acquired sound.  Before that, psychedelic, heavy metal, hard rock, soul, teenybopper and new wave had all swept over the land of the rising sun.  Idol singers were abundant in the eighties, and a few are still around today.  Of course there are current versions of idols, but the once popular "innocent girl" image has been replaced with more overt personalities.  Mari Iijima got her start by voicing a character in the popular '80s anime series Macross.  She went on to become a singer, even writing her own first album in 1983.  This is quite rare for J-pop debuts, even today.  Iijima has gone on to record English albums, and received accolades overseas for her work.  From her Coquettish Blue album is "Telephone!", a track with attitude  It uses the type of R&B sound heard on American band Klymaxx's work.  Meshed with a synthesized arrangement, "Telephone!" is a kooky treat.
